Promised to have an early start today, out of the house by 8am. Sadly we had a late night last night so we all slept in. Not to worry, down to Battery Park and on to the Staten Island Ferry. We walked past the queue for the Statue of Liberty - the ticket holders queue snaked for 2 kilometres and was taking 5 hours to get to the boat. Glad we didn't book that tour!!! On the ferry and past the Statue of Liberty, it is quite a nice boat ride. Walked up to a cafe and had coffee then went back to the ferry and back to Manhattan. The ferry is free so it's VERY popular and it was packed. Walked to Chelsea Markets for lunch (2.30pm), after lunch Harley and Amanda went home with the kids and the rest of us walked the length of the High Line.
This is a railway line built as a viaduct infrastructure above the traffic in the late 1920s and was considered obsolete in the 1960s and replaced by the subway. It has recently been developed as a walkway, passing lots of innovative architecture, contemporary graffiti and gardens. A very pleasant walk looking down on the streets of Downtown NYC.
Had a beer at a retro bar in Chelsea before getting the subway home for tea at about 6pm. Another busy day, we had to get home fairly early because we have our 2 day Niagara Falls trip starting early in the morning.

View of Downtown New York from the ferry - the tall building is the One World Tower which replaced the twin towers.
Battery Park is the trees in the foreground. |

| Chelsea Markets surprisingly we weren't the only ones here. |

ReplyDeleteLoved the Hi Line. Innovative use of the old overhead rail. We enjoyed just wandering the streets and poking in odd places.
So much to see. 😀
Enjoy Niagara Falls.

Have only just read your Blog. Has been busy here. Loved it, looks like it is bloody cold. Enjoy the rest of your time with the family.
ReplyDeleteThanks John, NYC certainly provides great scope to wander around the streets and poke in to odd places if you wish. Loving it all, we feel really safe and of course the public transport system is sensational. Love to all, Pam and Vernon
ReplyDeleteThanks Tim, it is a little chilly. I can imagine you've been a bit busy lately, moving house and hosting Christmas, I suppose you've had to work occasionally in between all the flooding rain. We are enjoying having all the family together, no arguments....yet!!! Love to all, Pam and Vernon
