Day 6 - Brooklyn

Bright sunny day, everyone had a good night sleep so the plan was to have a big day (don't worry, mission accomplished).
Started with breakfast at a local diner, the 3 Star Diner.  Wow, what a breakfast, the typical endless coffee, griddle potatoes, Belgian waffles, corned meat hash and eggs, pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, omelettes, endless toast, we are good for about 6 hours now!!!
Luke was the guide after he had received advice from friends and acquaintances about places to visit.  Subway downtown for a walk across Brooklyn Bridge which spans the East River, an awe inspiring walk which was obvious from the crowds who thought the same thing.  Lots and lots of photos and a walk around the parks under the bridge.
Time for a coffee in the baddest part of town in a coffee shop in an old warehouse near the East River.  Good coffee in an industrial setting.  Subway to Katz's where they have world famous Reuben sandwiches (corned meat/pastrami, sauerkraut, cheese, dressing with pickles on the side).  This is the shop where Meg Ryan had some fake fun and the woman in the next booth 'wanted what she's having'.  The crowd was lined up down the street, finally made it and and everyone in New York decided to have lunch at Katz's today(it was 2.30 though).  It only took 45 minutes from the time we joined the queue till we had food.  Biggest corned meat sandwiches in history, we each had half each and wont need tea!!
Subway back home with a purchase of some New York cheese cake on the way.  Lucky we are doing lots of walking to keep the calories off.
Thousands of photos between the 10 of us, don't know where to begin!!!

All ready for breakfast.

As you can see there are plenty of photos of the Brooklyn Bridge

Off the bridge now, that 'box' in the foreground is a carousel, covered for protection from the elements.

Of course we had a ride

Looking for trouble, ready for coffee!

Can't have too many photos of the Brooklyn Bridge

  1. Great pics.
Have finally caught up with your travels - between grandchildren at the moment!!!
An Australian fellow told Amy and I, when we were at the top of the Empire State Building, how to remember the order of the bridges across the Hudson and East Rivers. Of course, an Aussie would know!!! BMW he said - Brooklyn, Manhattan, Washington. There are more than 3 bridges across each of those rivers, and I still can't name any of them!!! And I think he was suffering from altitude sickness!!!
Love the jumpers - especially en masse, they look great. Deserving of a large, framed, wall hanging!!
Are you planning to go up the One World Tower? Fabulous views over Liberty and Ellis Islands, and close enough to the wharf to do a cruise around them, especially if the sun is shining.
    Enjoy Niagara Falls.
    Love Maur.

  2. Thanks Maureen, your geographic skills are invaluable, we have taken it on board and are trying to re-educate the locals......they think you may be suffering from heat stroke.......or something??!! The jumpers may be hung...just not on the wall, we suggest the gallows? We have lots of plans, lucky there is not much to do in New York we should get it all done!!! Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas, love from all the New York Holcombes xxxxxxxx
